To the average person rural fences all look alike, but to the skilled eye the difference between a good fence and a bad fence is more than a friendly neighbour!

Background

Wire and Wood Ltd is a family run business specialising in supplying all your agricultural fencing needs. This has grown from having 30 years experience in the fencing world, erecting fences all across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire.

Endless hours of replacing and renewing sagging, broken fences lead to the idea of something so simple it seemed ridiculous no-one had done it before.

The eureka moment

In 2021, James designed and started producing a new stock net – FX8/97/22 now R8-95-22. The wire is slightly taller, negating the need for two strands of barbed wire. This enables the fence to be erected in a more efficient manner. The gap between the lower strands is slightly wider than normal netting, enabling wildlife to move through fences much easier; it makes great enclosures for re-wilding and stewardship schemes. Alongside our own wire, we also supply a range of different netting for all other situations.

Convincing people to shift their allegiance from standard 80cm high sheep netting has been surprisingly easy. The ease with which it goes up, ties off, and the reduction of barbed wire, has all contributed to the growing demand for R8-95-22.

Wire and Wood today

Evolving the business to be a supplier has enabled James to take the new netting out to estates, stewardship schemes and farms across the counties and further west.
